Approach to Phonics and Reading
At Brigg Primary we have recently updated our reading materials, we use a variety of reading schemes, which are colour coded for progression throughout the school. Ginn, Rigby All Stars and Oxford Reading Tree books are primarily used for individual reading.
Children are introduced to guided reading in Year 1 as they become a more confident and skilled reader. Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of pupils who demonstrate similar reading skills and can all read similar levels of texts. The text offers challenges and opportunities for problem solving, but is easy enough for pupils to read with some support teacher or peer support. Reading as a group allows our children to discuss the text and answer comprehension questions.
The teaching of phonics follows the Read Write Inc scheme. Phonic teaching continues throughout the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, with children moving through the programme in line with their ability. Year 3 pupils which require further support also attend RWI booster sessions.
Children are assessment regularly and may be taught with pupils from other year groups in order to receive the appropriate phonic teaching. Sessions last for approximately 20 minutes and occur at least 4 times per week.
‘Phonic Play’ or 'Spelling Play' interactive activities are also used to support learning.
